I det danske drama 'Pigen med nålen' kæmper den unge fabriksarbejder Karoline for at overleve i København i tiden lige efter 1. Verdenskrig.
Arbejdsløs, forladt og gravid, møder hun den karismatiske kvinde, Dagmar, der driver et hemmeligt adoptionsbureau, hvor hun hjælper mødre med at finde plejefamilier til deres uønskede børn.
Karoline har ikke andre steder at tage hen, så hun flytter hjem til Dagmar i rollen som amme. En stærk forbindelse mellem de to kvinder opstår i en ellers barsk og grusom verden, men snart går en chokerende sandhed op for Karoline.
Filmen 'Pigen med nålen' er inspireret af virkelige hændelser. Dramaet deltog i hovedkonkurrencen i Cannes, var nomineret til en Golden Globe og ligner også en Oscar-kandidat.
